During our first DSoC member meeting of the new Spring 2024 semester, we were joined by multiple amazing guest speakers:
Kenneth English, Program Director, Black Student Services
Dean Scott Bauer, Professor and Associate Dean of Advanced Education & Doctoral Programs, SEHD
Carol Wahby, Doctoral Programs Coordinator, SEHD
Mari Ortega, Lecturer, 4th year Doctoral Student, 2022-2023 DSoC President
Kenneth shared information with us about the programs and supports offered by Black Student Services, which is a part of a CU Denver’s Center for Identity & Inclusion. He also offered opportunities for collaboration between DSoC and Black Student Services to ensure Black student success in higher education.
Carol and Dean Bauer shared important information and resources regarding the advising process within SEHD, including the distinctions between the roles of the Doctoral Programs Coordinator, your Faculty Advisor, and your dissertation/DRP committee chair. We also learned more about efforts within SEHD to improve the advising experience of both doctoral students and faculty.
Last but definitely not least, we were joined by previous past president of DSoC, Mari Ortega. Mari will be leading a Structured Writing Support Group over a 12-week period where you can expect an engaging experience designed to enhance your academic writing skills. This support is a biweekly gathering (6 sessions x 2 hours each) where participants will engage in various writing exercises, receive constructive feedback, and collaborate with peers to refine their academic writing abilities!
